If you are having trouble getting physicians to participate, remind them that this kind of community work will look good on the resume that they submit to managed care companies who are now paring down the lists of physicians supported by their plans. “Physicians these days need to position themselves as wellness knowledgeable, and aware of fitness as a resource to manage risk [for managed care clients]” says Mary Swanson, president of HealthCare Resources.

Present participating physicians/specialists with a nice plaque from your organization that they can display in their office to show they are helping their community. You can always offer physicians a free membership to encourage their own healthy lifestyle choice, ensure that they are visible in your facility, and thank them for their time and support.

Work with physicians to explain the results of the new surgeon general’s report (being released in May) to your community. You can offer solutions to many of the problems that will be identified in the report, and physicians can explain the report clinically.

Zaik, now vice president of HealthCare Resources, recommends that you provide physicians with the resources they need to send their patients to your facility for specific problems (i.e., smoking cessation, weight management, lifestyle management, nutrition counseling, self-esteem programs, etc.). At the Western Reserve Club, Zaik gave the physicians he worked with pre-printed prescription pads to help doctors refer their patients into specific programs. Each physician was instructed to fax the prescription to WRC before handing it to the patient, and then the patient was told to expect a follow-up call from WRC.

This assured the physician that the patient would have a better chance of participating in the recommended treatment, and it gave WRC a lead for a new program participant.

Another idea to add value for committee members is to meet with them over lunch or dinner once a quarter and provide them with an outside lecturer who can teach them about the benefits of fitness, health and nutrition. You can also perform case study reviews and discuss issues in the community. This kind of educational sharing will help enhance your image in their eyes, and they’ll be even more likely to talk (and write) about your facility and programs.

Are Soft Drinks Really to Blame?

The number of obese children in America is on the rise and the percentage of obese children has nearly doubled since 1980. A growing concern over these growing children has initiated research to determine the factors that are contributing to this trend. The latest research points to sugar-sweetened drinks, soda in particular, as major contributors to weight gain. A study published in the Feb. 17 issue of The Lancet reports that as little as an extra soft drink per day increases a child’s chance of becoming obese by 60 percent. There are significant amounts of added sugars in such beverages, but can we really place all of the blame on soft drinks?

The researchers of the Lancet study, led by David S. Ludwig, M.D., of Children’s Hospital in Boston, monitored more than 500 children ages 11-12 in Massachusetts for two years and recorded their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, fruit drinks (Kool-Aid, Hawaiian Punch, lemonade), and iced-tea. The researchers also noted changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) throughout the time period. BMI is an index derived from body weight and height and is often used as an indicator for obesity.

What the researchers found was that even after accounting for factors like dietary intake, physical activity, and television viewing, there was a relationship between an increased consumption of soft drinks and the risk for becoming obese in these children — as much as a 60 percent increase in risk.

This results are limited by the fact that the researchers only analyzed developing adolescents when BMI is naturally changing and for focusing on many children who were already obese at the onset of the study. Further, the results involve an “extra soft drink per day” and do not necessarily account for the total number of soft drinks consumed per day.

Researchers also tracked the children’s intake of pure fruit juice, though they say this did not contribute to their findings. Pure fruit juices contain “natural sugars” whereas soft drinks, the focus of the study, contain “added sugars.” Groups including the Center for Science in the Public Interest often target drinks with “added sugars,” such as sodas and fruit drinks as causes of obesity because they are high in calories but low in nutrition.

According to Ruth Kava, childhood obesity is a problem of many factors and does not solely result from the overconsumption of soft drinks. She states, “[i]n considering causes of childhood obesity, the most important issues are consumption of excess calories and inactivity levels.

When it comes to obesity, a calorie is still a calorie. To help combat this disturbing trend in children, parents should be sure to monitor all aspects of their children’s diets rather than implicating one particular source of calories as the culprit. Kava adds, “Demonizing one food or one ingredient sends a misleading message to parents and children alike.”

There’re numerous great and strong advantages of pharmacy online. The medications which are obtainable at an internet store are normally much more economical than that are affordable in a nearest drugstore.

Insurance carriers are gaining substantial increases in almost every category. This has triggered clubs to lower some of their coverage levels, increase their deductibles, self-insure with stop-loss insurance coverage, develop staff safety training and committees, reward staff for proper loss controls, and handle facility incidents properly so insurance carriers can contest bogus claims and control their reserve limits.

With interest rates falling, many facilities have successfully refinanced their debt. Others have challenged the CAM (common area maintenance) charges on their rent, or actually had an audit performed on them.

Some have successfully protested real estate taxes and realized major reductions, or challenged the useful lives on their personal property tax calculations.

For many, information technology has led to a variety of savings. Fitness centers now use paperless membership contracts, automatic bank deposits for paychecks, T1 and ISDN networks, and outsourced IT support. This has led to eliminating some staff, renegotiating EFT and credit card fees, Intranet employee communication, online staff timesheets and the elimination of all manual checks.

INTRODUCTION: Isn’t it a horrible feeling when our hair begins to fall out and our scalps become more visible each day? It can be mind boggling when we attempt to locate a viable option to return our hair to its former glory. Well, just about everybody gets hit by the unpleasantness of hair loss from time to time. It may be due to genes, scalp infection, dandruff or incorrect usage of cosmetics. No matter the cause, hair loss is something that few people passively accept, especially males. This condition is called male pattern baldness. It is characterized by a circular bald spot surrounded by sparse hair. Similar to the photos of our relatives hanging on the wall!

Healthcare Uses: It’s very likely we could now put all of our concerns to rest since the answer to our prayers is now available in the form of a finasteride pill. The medical property of propecia, finasteride aids males afflicted with known male-routine baldness or inherited baldness conditions. It works by halting the hair from thinning and uprooting, or it aids to restore the lost hair. The reason for loss of hair in male routine baldness is testosterone. The root cause of male pattern baldness is when the body converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.

MECHANISM: Propecia functions by hampering the androgenetic process of hair loss. Dihydrotestosterone ranges come down when you take finasteride and this will continue until the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) has reached a level that promotes hair regrowth and reduces male routine baldness. Finastride reduces the effect that dihydrotestosterone has on the hair follicles, which makes their roots stronger, the result of which is less hair loss and a stop to thinning hair.

DOSAGE: Propecia is administered in the form of a pill but should should only be taken after consulting with a reputable dermatologist who prescribes the medication specifically for you. Various factors determine the dosage that is prescribed, including the extent and rate of hair loss, the cause of the hair loss, and any other illnesses or conditions that are present. Nonetheless, the usual propecia dosage is 1 mg per day. Propecia dosage should not be changed or stopped without medical consultation. Changes should only be made under certain conditions and instructions. It is advisable to be a bit careful when using propecia without prescription. Patients should always take the medication as prescribed at the exact same time every day.

Compare the Prices of Propecia: Propecia’s side effects include erectile dysfunction, reduced libido and reduced quantity of ejaculate. Propecia side effects are uncommon and hard to predict sometimes. Breast sensitivity, rashes, ache and swelling of testicles, and wheezing are a few of the other side effects.

It’s not uncommon for health clubs to focus a large portion of time, energy and resources on soliciting and advertising. However, by applying that same kind of effort toward providing a quality service, you not only build a loyal clientele, but you also build the kind of reputation that brings people in by word-of-mouth — the best and cheapest form of advertisement there is.

A common complaint of aerobics patrons is that they are forgotten once they sign on the dotted line.

Students have to be convinced they are appreciated and that they have everything to gain by being affiliated with your program — fitness, weight loss, self-esteem, friendships, reduced stress, etc.

A quote by motivation expert Dale Carnegie underlines this idea beautifully and should be on every manager’s desk: “There is only one way to get people to do something, make them want to do it!”

For a cardiovascular endurance program to be successful, a person must consistently engage in the appropriate quantity and quality of exercise, as established by mode(s), frequency, duration and intensity of activity. While all four of these components are important, it is the exercise intensity that is the hardest to correctly gauge. Historically, fitness instructors have told individuals to use target heart rates as the only assessment of intensity.

Unfortunately, there are several subtle, yet important, factors associated with the use of target heart rate that too often are not addressed fully or correctly by the instructor, and/or are misunderstood by the exercise participant.

In addition, the concept of perceived exertion is often not presented nor applied in exercise programs, depriving many individuals of a useful and important tool for safely and effectively engaging in a quality cardiovascular endurance exercise program.

Therefore, we as fitness professionals and instructors need to implement target heart rate appropriately, as well as consistently emphasize perceived exertion in order to truly develop a quality endurance exercise program.

Cigar smoking has become an increasingly popular trend and a growing public health concern in recent years. While many mistakenly believe that cigars are a safe alternative to cigarettes, recent research reveals that cigars carry many of the same health hazards as cigarettes. Indeed, a new study by the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that regular cigar smoking increases the risk of premature death from coronary heart disease (CHD).

The ACS study, published in the Nov. 8 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, analyzed data between 1982 and 1991 from a survey of 121,287 men age 30 and older. Researchers limited their analysis to participants who had never smoked pipes or cigarettes and who had not been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes at the start of the study. Death rates of current and former cigar smokers were compared with those of nonsmokers. During the nine years examined, a total of 2,508 participants died of coronary heart disease.

Researchers found that current cigar smokers age 30 to 74 faced a 30 percent greater risk of dying from coronary heart disease than nonsmokers. Cigar smokers aged 75 and older and former cigar smokers, however, did not experience an increased risk of CHD death.

Lead author Eric J. Jacobs, Ph.D., explained the inconsistent findings among older smokers. “When you’re talking about men in their 70s, 80s and 90s,” Jacobs explained, “death rates are already so high that it is difficult to detect modest increases in risk.” Jacobs also commented that men who are still smoking at these older ages are likely a healthier group.

Despite a significant decline from 1964 to 1992, cigar use in the United States increased by nearly 50 percent from 1993 to 1996. The past decade has seen the rise of cigar bars, cigar smoking sections in restaurants and cigar sheik led by celebrities, many of whom have posed on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine. Adolescents are also picking up the habit with more than 25 percent of high school boys and roughly 10 percent of high school girls reporting that they smoked at least one cigar within the past month.

“Any adverse effect of cigars on coronary heart disease is of particular importance given the recent rise in the prevalence in cigar smoking in the United States,” Jacobs remarked.

The majority of the smokers in the ACS study smoked cigars daily.

“It is quite possible that a lot of people think that because they don’t inhale with cigars as they do with cigarettes, that cigars aren?t as harmful,” Jacobs said. “But, this does not appear to be true.”

The findings from the latest ACS study are consistent with previous reports. A study earlier this year similarly found that cigar smokers had a 27 percent higher risk of heart disease than nonsmokers. This earlier report also found that cigar smokers faced about twice the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and lung.

Symptoms

Persistent, unpleasant, and unwelcome mental images, often with a violent theme. Disturbing thoughts or impulses that may conflict with moral or religious beliefs. An uncontrollable urge to count, touch, or reorganize everything in sight. Washing hands until they are raw to placate an excessive fear of germs. Repeatedly checking that the door is locked or the stove is turned off because you are convinced that disaster will strike unless you do so.

These are some of the possible manifestations of obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, an anxiety disorder that afflicts about 1 in 50 Americans. The obsessions are the distressing thoughts or images that sufferers can’t seem to shake. The compulsions are the overt or covert rituals they engage in to temporarily relieve the stress associated with those unpleasant thoughts or images. OCD episodes last at least an hour each day, although symptoms may ebb flow, abate over time, or worsen as a person gets older. Anyone can develop OCD at any age; about one-third of adult OCD sufferers experienced their first symptoms as children. Children with OCD seldom realize that their obsessive thoughts and ritualistic behaviors are out of the ordinary. Adults with OCD generally recognize that their obsessions or compulsions are unreasonable or extreme.

OCD is sometimes accompanied by depression, an eating disorder, or other anxiety disorders, such as panic attacks. OCD victims may avoid situations that trigger their obsessions, or they may abuse drugs or alcohol in an unsuccessful attempt to relieve their anxiety. In most cases, however, OCD is rarely severe enough to prevent someone from meeting their responsibilities at home or work.

Treatment

A form of behavioral therapy known as “exposure and response prevention” exposes the OCD patient to the situation that triggers the compulsion and then helps them avoid engaging in the usual ritual. For example, the therapist might have the patient leave a room, lock the door, then refrain from returning to check that the door is indeed locked. This therapy works best in patients who complete a behavioral therapy program, according to the APA, though results have been less promising in some people who have both OCD and clinical depression.

Studies indicate that about half of OCD patients respond to medicinal treatment. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the most effective medications for OCD include fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, clomipramine and fluoxetine. More OCD drugs are under development.

Early ejaculation is a illness that frustrating countless men. Fortunately, there is information that will help out you to end you premature ejaculation trouble.

You’re probably already feeling sleeker, stronger and more sculpted—and the best muscle makeover is yet to come. It’s time for stepped-up moves called triples, which target three muscle groups at once, always including your stomach.

For each of the moves in this plan, created by Skip Gagnon, exercise physiologist at The Golden Door Spa at the Wyndham Peaks Resort in Telluride, Colorado, keep your abs pulled in tight the entire time.

To ensure good form—and great results—Gagnon has clients tie a piece of string around their waists; when abs are totally tucked in, the string goes slack. Try it! Do two sets of 12 to 15 reps of each move. Or substitute your own total-body strength-training program, as long as you do three 20-minute sessions a week.

You may have heard of both Proscar and Propecia in recent years in ads on the television, radio, and in print. What type of drugs are they? What are the effects of these two drugs?

It’s hard to believe, but both of these medicines, which are only available by prescription, contain different amounts of the same generic drug called Finasteride. However, they are used for different conditions and one cannot be substituted for the other. These drugs are extremely dangerous to a developing baby if the mother is exposed to them, since they can be absorbed through the skin. Women who touch broken pieces of these pills should quickly and immediately cleanse the area with soap and water. Proscar and Propecia are only prescribed for men.

Proscar has a higher dosage of finasteride (5 mg versus 1 mg in Propecia), and are most commonly apple-shaped. Propecia is a 1 mg tablet; thus, it provides a smaller amount of finasteride per tablet. You cannot know the dosages of split tablets, so don’t try to break apart a Proscar tablet to take in smaller portions. Because these medications contain other active and inactive ingredients, it is not a good idea to take five tablets of Propecia to obtain the benefits of taking one Proscar tablet.

You may be wondering how the two are the same, and how they are different. Proscar is utilized in the treatment of enlarged prostate in men, also referred to as BPH. Proscar prevents the testosterone produced by men’s bodies from turning into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. DHT has been shown to potentially be associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. It is more often referred to as prostate cancer. It has been demonstrated that prostate cancer can be effectively delayed or prevented in approximately 25 percent of men who were likely to develop this form of cancer. Propecia is utilized to treat male pattern baldness. Propecia works congruently with the cycle of growth and shedding of human hair in men. After three months of taking generic Propecia, hair loss will slow or stop. If you take Propecia and find that it helps, you would be wise to continue taking it. Once you stop taking the medication, most likely the hair loss pattern that was in place prior to taking the medication will return.

Finasteride is only available with doctor’s prescription. Usually a prescription can be obtained when the patient has an office visit with his doctor and consults with him or her. As is the case with most medication, Propecia and Proscar produce some side effects. Some temporary side effects (while the body adapts to the medication) include hypersensitivity and minor rashes, decreased sexual interest, and decreased semen production. It is advisable to consider the benefits and dangers of these medicines before deciding it they are right for you.
