Tennis elbow is a term used to describe soreness or pain in the elbow. Tennis elbow, also called epicondylitis, occurs when there is inflammation in the end of the tendons (tendinitis) that connect the muscles of the forearm, wrist, and hand to the upper arm bone at the elbow. Click here to see an illustration of tennis elbow.

The soreness or pain of tennis elbow is usually felt on the outside (lateral) part of the elbow. The term “golfer’s elbow” is sometimes used to describe soreness or pain in the inner (medial) part of the elbow. The term “Little League elbow” may be used to describe elbow pain in children. However, elbow pain in children is usually caused by other problems (and treatment may be different).

Tennis elbow generally occurs in adults between the ages of 20 and 65 and is most common during the 40s. It is usually caused by overuse from repeated hand and wrist movements done during many everyday activities (such as using a screwdriver).

Treatment can heal the inflamed tendon and make your elbow feel better. Treatment includes resting your arm, taking steps to reduce pain and inflammation, and following a rehabilitation program that strengthens the muscles to help recovery and prevent further injury. Another important step is to change or stop activities that may have caused your tennis elbow. Surgery is usually not needed.

There’s always something in the news to do with skating, but over the last couple of weeks there have been a couple of things which caught my eye.

KENT — A high school student in a thong and inline skates being videotaped by his buddy on a trail Tuesday offended a golfer, who assaulted the cameraman and teed off on the camera, according to police.
“It was a 9-iron with a graphite shaft,” said A.J. Roulston, a Highline High School senior who donned the sparkly, golden thong to play the “overweight” guy for a class project inspired by MTV’s “Jackass,” a show full of silly pranks and dangerous stunts.
Nearly naked Roulston was skating on the trail adjacent to Riverbend Golf Course about 7 p.m. as his classmate Chris Machowski recorded his every move. As they made their way past the No. 3 green, a man in his 40s playing golf with his two young sons began yelling anti-homosexual remarks at Roulston and Machowski, they told police.

The man put his beer down on the green, ran at Machowski, pushed him to the ground, grabbed him by the throat, then picked up his golf club and destroyed Machowski’s $500 camera.
“I could have run and got away,” Machowski said. “But I had to record him running at me.”
Machowski suffered scraped hands and knees. His dad was going to take him to the hospital Tuesday night to get checked out.
Machowski admits he and Roulston aren’t completely blameless.
“We provoked him,” he said. “But he didn’t have to break my camera. He’ll have to pay for that.”
Kent police took the video tape into evidence as they continue to investigate. A decision will be made later on whether to arrest the man, officers said.
Without the tape, Machowski and Roulston will have to come up with another introduction to their video project on the pros and cons of steroid use.
What does an overweight man in a thong roller skating on a golf course have to do with steroids?
Nothing, the students admit. But they predicted the image would capture the attention of their sleepy classmates in first-period English, so that they might watch the rest of the film.

Learn how to select the right board for you.

It looks very cool on the X Games and Gravity Games and it doesn’t cost a lot to get started. So, what is the first thing you need? A skateboard. You can pick up a skateboard at flea markets, yard sales, discount stores, online, and lots of other places. Why pay $30 or more for a new board when you can get one for 50 cents at a garage sale?

Skateboards have changed a lot since their beginning (no one is sure exactly when, but over 30 years ago). The board you see in a junk pile may belong there. You need to know what to look for and why you would want to pay more for a good board.

The quality of the board will determine how fast you learn and how much you enjoy boarding. A bad board will only making it harder to learn and may prevent you from learning tricks.

Let’s start with the most basic part, the deck (the part you stand on). Decks can be made from plywood, fiberglass, aluminum, or other materials. Generally plywood is your best bet. It is the deck the most skateboarders use. Forget the paint job on the bottom, make sure the deck itself isn’t warped or cracked and that it is solid and slightly flexible.

Next comes the wheels, spin the wheels by hand. If the wheels wobble, stick, or look warped, keep looking. You will want to get urethane wheels, they last longer and perform better than clay wheels. The size of the wheel depends on the kind of boarding you plan to do. For street and freestyle, you want 1 1/8 inch diameter wheels. For downhill you need 2 1/4 or 2 5/8 in wheels.

Now look at the trucks (the part holding the wheels to the deck). They should be solid, but still allow you to turn the board. When you lean to turn the wheels should be at the edge of the board or just beyond the edge.

Skateboards come in many shapes and sizes now. To learn find a freestyle or street board, once you learn to skate you can try out different style boards to see which works best for you.
