Recipe Framework Error: MetaGuidancePackage.dll not copied

24 02 2008

Some time before the Guidance Toolkit for Visual Studio 2008 was released to the world, I couldn’t resist trying out the previous GAT version on VS 2008. After some fun and tears, I decided to wait (and uninstalled that version as a result).

Software Factories - The developer gap

22 02 2008

In this post I’ll try to clarify one of the reasons why we (and the IT industry in general) need software factories. I’ll illustrate this by looking at the ongoing evolution of Microsoft .NET.

Event - Service Factory: Modeling Edition

20 02 2008

On February 21, 2008, the VISUG has planned a very interesting event for everyone who’s into Software Factories.

Olaf Conijn will be telling us about the new release of the Service Factory and how it can help us build our future software projects in a better way.

Visual Studio User Group

Quoting the VISUG event-description:
Being an extremely useful tool for architects and developers, the next release of the Service Factory adds one of the most often requested features: a graphical tool for designing message contracts and service interfaces based on the Visual Studio SDK, DSL Toolkit and Guidance Automation Toolkit. There are clear advantages of using a modeling environment when building services. The development team has more flexibility when the modeling environment includes logical models that don’t force platform and language decisions too early in the project. When this environment has a great deal of extensibility, the capabilities are only limited by imagination. The Web Service Software Factory: Modeling Edition provides this type of modeling environment. Attend this demo-heavy session to see how the Service Factory can be used and extended by your service development team. The event will take place at Compuware in Zaventem and will start around 18.30. The VISUG also mentions the ending time of the event to be 20.30h. But who knows, maybe we’ll have a lot more to ask and talk about, that we’ll end up somewhere in Compuware’s neighbourhood :) .

Don’t forget to register on the website, and I hope to see you there!

Regards,
Laila

Setting the scene - Layered Architecture

14 02 2008

Domain Driven Design is all about capturing the business logic into application code, no matter how complex it is. But code is not about business logic alone, there needs to be some code to take care of several other aspects like interfacing, data retrieval and persistence, communication, logging, security and much more… Read the rest of this entry »

Setting the scene - Introduction to Domain Driven Design

12 02 2008

Welcome to this first installment of my column ‘Setting the scene’. As the title already points out, this column will not be about software factories per se, but will highlight the important aspects of the environment that we want to create with our factory.

Domain Driven DesignWe believe that first and foremost a software factory should support the business needs of a company, and that’s just what Domain Driven Design is all about. In his book, Eric Evans has captured a number of best practices that he has observed in successful teams from the past. So this book provides a broad framework for making design decisions as well as a technical vocabulary for discussing domain design. It is a synthesis of widely accepted best practices along with the author’s own insights and experiences. I can definitely recommend you to read this book.

In future installments, I will try to briefly explain both the technical aspects of Domain Driven Design as other equally important aspects regarding design and communication. But if you can’t wait and want to venture into DDD yourself, you can have a look at one of the blogs listed in the DDD blogroll.

Stay tuned,
Yves Goeleven

Welcome!

12 02 2008

Welcome to the IntoFactories.NET team blog! What’s all this you might be wondering?

Well, it was just a little while ago that we decided to focus on “this” Software factories concept; What they really are?  How and where we can use them?
Next, add some curiosity regarding Domain-Driven Design (DDD) to it and you find yourself reading this post.

So, what can you expect to find here?

We have no idea where all this is going, but we do have these things in mind:

  • Blog regularly about factories and DDD
  • Explore concepts related to factory construction like solution structures, artifact templates, etc.
  • Gather best practices and how to’s
  • And much more

Well, enough said…time for some action!

Spiritual Well Being. Part 2

Spiritual Well Being. Part 1

So often we seperate physical well being and spiritual well being; yet aren’t they one and the same? Here are some ponderings on the inherent wisdom found in the teachings of Susun Weed. In my life there have been a few that stood out to me in this special way. Not so much because they were [..]
